Sun Shine Po

This watercolour painting shows a busy urban street scene in the Sham Shui Po district in Kowloon, Hong Kong. I enjoy capturing scenes of real life in Hong Kong and I’m fascinated by the wealth of details and energy that can be found in any given scene of Hong Kong. I particularly like the older districts of Sham Shi Po and Wan Chai as they are full of character and interesting older ‘Tong Lau’ style buildings as well as the distinctive 1960s style tenement buildings with their curved corners. The title of this piece is a play on the name of this area ’Sham Shui Po’ which in Cantonese means ‘Deep Water Pier’. Not sure why exactly, as it’s far from any water, but occasionally the sunlight does shine down into the concrete canyons. Hence the name of this artwork.
