For my submission to the ‘Joy In Art’ Watercolour Open Exhibition 2025, I reflected on the theme of ‘Watercolour Joy’ as a long-time resident of Hong Kong. I concentrated on the special moments shared with family and friends, particularly those unique to life in this vibrant city.
This artwork captures the essence of ‘Junk Trips,’ a beloved leisure activity in Hong Kong. These outings on chartered boats allow people to revel in the stunning beauty of the city’s bays and beaches, and enjoy amazing sunset views.
In this piece, I aimed to convey joy by illustrating children leaping into the water from the junk boats—a thrilling and memorable moment that embodies the happiness of these experiences. I personally enjoyed painting this artwork, and love the way the medium of watercolour allows for expressive brushstrokes, wonderful blending of pigments and the celebration of light and life.
